Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most current Edition of the LT Guide?

The 21st Revision 2024 is the most current Edition of the LT Guide.  It's recommended you use this Guide, most especially if you are doing any long, multi-days or thru-Hiking on the LT.   This Edition should also answer most of your questions about the LT.

State Forest Roads

Loyalsock State Forest Resource Management Center (phone # 570-946-4049 or [email protected]) is the best source for State Forest Road conditions.

Campsites

Campsites are plentiful along the LT and Link Trail.  Find any stream and most likely there will be one or more campsites.  You don’t need a permit to camp if only camping one night at a site.  If camping more than one night at a location, you’ll need a free camping permit from Loyalsock State Forest (see page 8 in the Loyalsock Trail Guide for contact information).

Water Availability

Most streams, even during a drought, will have some pools of water.  All water needs to be filtered or chemically treated.  While you could boil the water, it’s time consuming and a waste of fuel.

Stream Crossings

You’ll cross many streams, most of which are seasonal.  Concerned about the crossings?  Google Loyalsockville Stream Gauge.  If the gauge height is 3' or higher, the seasonal streams should have flowing water.  Note: the higher the stream gauge the more difficult the crossings.  Kettle Creek, the largest stream the LT crosses, can be unfordable.  The stream gauge at 9' is the start of potential flooding.  If concerned about stream crossings, it would be prudent to carry a pair of light weight aqua shoes or sandals.

Shuttle Service

You will likely find a shuttle if you post the date(s) that rides are needed, using our:  LT Public Facebook Group
